week 7 - trial; day 1

seven vices case 7 trial, day 1

saturday

At 9AM, every television will go off, loud enough to wake anyone sleeping. The calm, apathetic voice will advise everyone to gather in the chapel for the trial. Static will continue to blare in the head of anyone dillydallying.

Once all of the guests have gathered in the chapel, the doors will lock. Most of the pews have been moved aside to allow for more space, and a few tables have been set up on the altar. On the first, there is an additional copy of the rulebook, and the information cards of the victim and suspects laid out, with space for the suspects to provide their whereabouts, as well as an autopsy report. There is also a large wheeled chalkboard upon which you may write theories. On the second table is a pitcher of water and some glasses, as well as very simple sandwiches and pastries.

The door behind the altar has finally been unlocked. It's a rather plain room with an area set off by a folding screen. Inside, you will find a table on which the victim's body has been laid out. Next to the table, two black and white photographs have been hung on the screen. they are close ups of the victim's body, as it was found when the body discovery announcement chimed. A few sticks of incense burn in the corner to avoid any smells.

At 6PM, the trial will adjourn. Everyone will be escorted back to the hotel by Miata, after which everyone is allowed to head to either the kitchen to get dinner, or to their rooms. Attempting to wander off into the other areas of the hotel will trigger the static alarms in everyone's heads/televisions.

[ Break listens with an expression that's actually rather stony, but other than that, he doesn't seem to have much reaction to what Rhys is saying. ]

Well, one of our suspects has use of a spear. It wouldn't cut off a head completely, but it would go partway through. That seems to match the description I heard.

[ Which is definitely casually accusing Undyne, but he just seems indifferent about it. ]

After all, even if the bat reappearing now would be convenient, we know a blade was involved here somehow. Or if not a blade, then a sharp edge of something.

[She doesn't look that shocked to be accused by Break, though she does cut in sounding rather miffed.]

You know how strong I am, yeah? It'd be way harder for me to stop halfway through cutting his head off instead of removing it with one blow!

Also, Papyrus can confirm I was in our room the whole time. I'd never let him wander out alone Friday morning until a body's been found. [UNDYNE WHY DIDN'T YOU LEAD WITH THAT...]

Perhaps. But it wouldn't be assured. Cutting off someone's head isn't easy. You have to strike between the bones perfectly if you want a clean beheading. It's not a guarantee even if you have strength and skill.

[ But the alibi he doesn't say anything to, since the buddy system working is like such a crapshoot that he's not good at arguing it... He was the one that refused to buddy up and almost got killed for it, so. ]

Really? [She shrugs.] If you say so. I've never beheaded a human before so I wouldn't know, but your necks always looked pretty weak to me!

Anyway, I could definitely strike between the bones perfectly if I wanted to, I live with skeletons. [clearly the most important part here stop insulting her pride Break god!!]

There is another reason I think it's possible, though.

[ He just adds after she's finished, but he's not smiling as much as in this icon... Ignore that. ]

We never found a murder weapon that fits nicely. If it's the chain, the imprints are a problem, it it's a bat, then that certainly couldn't be used to cut off someone's head. However, your spears don't need to be hidden or cleaned. They have the blade that could be used to make the cuts, the polearm that could be used for the beatings, and they do not linger long enough to be evidence for us to use.

I would never kill Alisha or Gilbert. [Now she sounds genuinely angry, though it's not directed entirely at Break.] I don't stab my friends in the back. Not ever. [A pause.] But I get that you can't take me at my word for that, so...

First off, not finding a weapon doesn't mean that one doesn't exist. We never found the weapon Vegeta used either which is why people started suspecting me and you and Faize, remember? Second, the shaft of my spear wouldn't be much good at beating someone's face in. [She summons her spear and hands it to Break so he can feel it out.] It's about as thin as your cane - if I hit him with it, it would have probably either left marks behind or split his entire skull open depending on how much strength I put behind it.

Third, if I was the type of person who didn't give a shit about who I murdered and would betray my own friends and set up this super complicated crime scene and stick someone's head on a record player as a sick joke, do you really think I'd be stupid or honorable enough to use my own weapon?!

[ He'll take the spear from her and feel it out, but he still doesn't actually say much. It's clear that he's listening, but he doesn't seem up for arguing her points or really revealing what he's thinking at all. He just seems tired, really. ]

I have no idea, honestly. My friend is dead, so it's my duty to examine every possibility. Surely you understand that, yes?

[ He starts to step away, so long as Undyne doesn't stop him. He's just going to head towards the body, since he'll go do his best to compare the two since he has the spear in hand anyways. Might as well... ]

So, if you'll excuse me. I'll return this in a moment.
