week 7 - trial; day 1
![]() ♫ saturday At 9AM, every television will go off, loud enough to wake anyone sleeping. The calm, apathetic voice will advise everyone to gather in the chapel for the trial. Static will continue to blare in the head of anyone dillydallying. Once all of the guests have gathered in the chapel, the doors will lock. Most of the pews have been moved aside to allow for more space, and a few tables have been set up on the altar. On the first, there is an additional copy of the rulebook, and the information cards of the victim and suspects laid out, with space for the suspects to provide their whereabouts, as well as an autopsy report. There is also a large wheeled chalkboard upon which you may write theories. On the second table is a pitcher of water and some glasses, as well as very simple sandwiches and pastries. The door behind the altar has finally been unlocked. It's a rather plain room with an area set off by a folding screen. Inside, you will find a table on which the victim's body has been laid out. Next to the table, two black and white photographs have been hung on the screen. they are close ups of the victim's body, as it was found when the body discovery announcement chimed. A few sticks of incense burn in the corner to avoid any smells. At 6PM, the trial will adjourn. Everyone will be escorted back to the hotel by Miata, after which everyone is allowed to head to either the kitchen to get dinner, or to their rooms. Attempting to wander off into the other areas of the hotel will trigger the static alarms in everyone's heads/televisions. >Discuss? setting rulebook |

The closet has a variety of hanging coats and sweaters, mostly in shades of green, brown, and other neutral colors. There's some ties hanging on a rack, too, though they seem untouched for the most part. The black suit he wore to the ball is hanging in there, too.
As for the dresser, if she rifles through the folded clothes carefully, she'll find a black folder with a white emblem printed on the front.]

Urashima lets out a shuddered gasp and raises a hand to his eyes, rubbing at hem with the back of his hand. This is sadder than he thought. Yeah, he's definitely starting to cry in the middle of the room search here, thanks a lot, don't mind him, Inaba but he'll try to hurry since he dose have another room to check. )
...I-I don't think he did it.
( And he'll go to check the safe next. )

[ She takes a quick glance over her shoulder at him, frowning as she grabs the black folder. ]
Are you okay? If you need it, I should have tissues in my pocket...
[ Because she always needs it when she's all by herself. But in any case, let's see what exactly is in this folder. Considering the motive probably something embarrassing, but. . . Hinata's reaction to it was definitely kind of peculiar. ]

No, there's actually nothing in the safe at all. Apparently he doesn't have anything here he considers valuable enough to lock away.
As for the folder, if Inaba opens it, the first thing she'll see is that it's only holding a single sheet of black paper with white text. There's a picture of Hinata at the top, underneath in bold text is printed his name, height, and weight. Underneath that is the simple title Reserve Course Student. Reading further down the page will reveal that Hinata was accepted to the Reserve Course program, by taking a normal entrance exam and paying a hefty tuition to be able to go to Hope's Peak Academy. There's no mention of a Super High School talent at all referenced in his profile, save for the part where it states that the Reserve Course is the only way for those without talent to be accepted to such a prestigious school. Probably coached in language to make it seem like Hope's Peak is really doing these kids a favor.
Underneath that is a piece of hotel notepad paper, taped to the very bottom of the page.]

Though Hajime's lack of an obvious, quantifiable, skill-oriented talent means that he cannot be given a true "Super High School Level" title, it would be a mistake not to take note of certain other qualities he possesses. Qualities such as bravery, loyalty, honesty, and kindness...traits which may seem simple and mundane on their own, but which Hajime manages to combine in a way that is truly awe-inspiring. His kindness in particular should not be overlooked, as it is perhaps where his greatest strength lies. He always seems to know exactly what to do or say in any situation where another's feelings are involved. And though he can be rude at times, the way in which he generally relates to others makes it difficult not to be drawn to him.
Truthfully, another file would be necessary for full and adequate notation of all the things that make Hajime Hinata an admirable man. Lacking the resources to do so, I will have to leave it at this. But Hajime himself would do well to remember that he has much to take pride in, even if he can't always see it himself.

( Or at least, he will be and he's shaking his head no in response to the question about tissues. Anyway, maybe it's a good thing that Hinata doesn't have anything valuable.. or is that sad too, who knows in this place. )
... What did you find?
( Just curious before he checks the bathroom )

[ She just looks at the message for several moments on end, as if Urashima's words haven't gotten to her and went through one ear and out the other. Inaba has to force herself to blink away tears, but she's crying anyway. Ugh, looks like she'll be the one needing those tissues instead.
Which she uses to dab her eyes before pocketing it and copying everything down into her notebook before closing the folder and mouthing a single word that's left unsaid. Stupid. ]
Mm, it's nothing important; don't worry about it. Make sure to check the vents too, while you're in there.
[ #ventgate continues ]

The bathroom itself is clean! The towels are hung up, and it doesn't look like anyone showered or used the sink this morning. He's not dumb enough to shower on the day of Room Searches, okay, he showered the night before. The vents are screwed into place and undisturbed.]

Nothing in here either... Is there anywhere else we should check...?
( He thinks they got everything??? )
no subject
[ Just give her a moment to stop crying because she's still crying a little. ]
I'll go back on my own.
no subject
( He doesn't reall leave right away but he isn't sure what to do, either. He hovers around for a second before reaching out to take one of her hands and give it a small squeeze, )
I'll wait for you, okay?
1/2
She can't help but be slightly surprised by that, if only momentarily. ]
no subject
You don't have to. Really.
no subject
I want to make sure you're okay.
no subject
[ She says that with a smile, almost easily. ]
But my feelings don't matter right now. What's more important is the trial, and figuring out who killed those two.
no subject
( He wants to find Alisha and Gilbert's killer but they're dead. The only way he can help them is to find their killer and they have all day to do that as far as he's concerned. As far as he's concerned, Inaba is alive right now so he'll focus on her right now. )
And they matter to me too.
no subject
[ She can't help but look with curious eyes, tilting her head to the side. ]
Why? [ It's one word, but it's a loaded question, filled with expectations. ]
no subject
Because I want to protect you too.
( He hasn't been doing a very good job lately, though, he feels like and his eyes shift away some just because he's hoping she won't see him starting to tear up, )
And I don't want you to just be safe; I want you to be happy too.
no subject
[ Her voice is cracking, and if she notices him starting to tear, she doesn't seem to say anything about it. ]
Not protection or happiness.
no subject
( There's a sniff, and he wipes away at his eyes again, shaking his head once like he isn't going to cry right now, not here... And he exhales one, shaking breath before he gives her a small smile. It's a little forced, just a little bit sad still, but it's real. )
... Someone important told me that.
no subject
Then I should throw all of those away, too. I don't need them. Because all I ever see is pain. Over and over again. In the past, the present, and the future. It's the reason why I hate being analytical.
I can see scenarios, but... none of them are good. I'm weak. Hopelessly weak. [ She scoffs, just a little. ] I guess my weakness just goes to show how fitting I really am for my name.
no subject
( He means it and while he sounds as gentle as ever, there's a warning edge to his voice, )
Have I mentioned I'm in an army back home? We're fighting a very important war and... many will die and that's our burden as the living.
And even if it hurts and makes us sad, we have to take everything we feel to heart and not for granted because it's the pain we feel right here ( --he raises a hand to his chest-- ) that separates us from those that can't feel compassion or reason. So don't give up and give in.
You might think it's weak but I think your name is beautiful and strong. So live up to it, "Himeko." Just like Alisha did.

[ Ugh, she's going to cry again, she hates this so much. Raising her arm to wipe her eyes so that he doesn't see, all she can do is shake her head. When she looks at him, it's with a smile. It's a very sad one, though. ]
I haven't given up, it's just that-- even if the deaths are painful. Even if the trials are brutal. Even if we fail at finding the culprit. And even if it all ends. I still won't be happy, you know? Or rather... maybe it's just fake happiness what I'll get.
no subject
( Is there something really preventing Inaba from being happy? He wants to know... )
