week 1 - trial; day 2

seven vices case 1 trial, day 2

sunday

At 9AM, every television will go off, loud enough to wake anyone sleeping. The calm, apathetic voice will advise everyone to gather in the chapel for the trial. Static will continue to blare in the head of anyone dillydallying.

Once all of the guests have gathered in the chapel, the doors will lock. Most of the pews have been moved aside to allow for more space, and a few tables have been set up on the altar. On the first, there is an additional copy of the rulebook, and the information cards of the victim and suspects laid out, with space for the suspects to provide their whereabouts, as well as an autopsy report. There is also a large wheeled chalkboard upon which you may write theories. On the second table is a pitcher of water and some glasses, as well as very simple sandwiches and pastries.

The door behind the altar has finally been unlocked. It's a rather plain room with an area set off by a folding screen. Inside, you will find a table on which the victim's body has been laid out. Next to the table, two black and white photographs have been hung on the screen. they are close ups of the victim's body, as it was found when the body discovery announcement chimed. A few sticks of incense burn in the corner to avoid any smells.

At 5PM, the trial will close, after which everyone is expected to have cast their votes.

So you told us they aren't all that powerful and I don't think you have a reason to lie about it. Is there absolutely no way it can kill a person?

The point of the spell card system - what danmaku are a part of - is so people don't have to die. So humans can duel to fight off youkai, and so youkai can leave with their lives if a human is trying to exterminate them. So that youkai can still cause mischief, but humans can prevent it from getting too far. Things like that. It was designed to be nonlethal from the very beginning.

It's a function of society, a way of life where I'm from, not a weapon. It's...a little difficult to explain to someone who doesn't know what it is.

Yeah it doesn't make sense, but I get what you're saying. Kaguya couldn't just make it into something lethal.

Would something prevent her from using in a way with the intent of death? It seems like the prevailing theory is she shot a danmaku at him to knock him down, then incapacitated him while he was dazed. Do the rules of your land mean she wouldn't be allowed to do that, even here?

In order for the rules of our land to apply, we have to declare a spell card duel. You agree on the number of patterns you'll use, and then you go through them, and whoever gets hit, or runs out of spells first, loses.

...With that in mind, you've obviously seen that we can still fire danmaku by themselves outside of spell card duels, so there's nothing preventing us from using them in that manner except for our own inhibitions.

Okay, that's good to know.

I'm guessing you don't have any light to shed on reasons Kaguya wouldn't kill? She seems pretty damn aloof to me.

I don't know her at all, so I can't say either way. Our ability to use danmaku means we're from the same place, but that's where our connection ends. I live underground, and I've never seen her before, which means she lives either in a secluded corner underneath the ground or she lives on the surface.

Fair enough. [She nods.] That's all I have to ask about this. Thanks.
