week 1 - trial; day 2

seven vices case 1 trial, day 2

sunday

At 9AM, every television will go off, loud enough to wake anyone sleeping. The calm, apathetic voice will advise everyone to gather in the chapel for the trial. Static will continue to blare in the head of anyone dillydallying.

Once all of the guests have gathered in the chapel, the doors will lock. Most of the pews have been moved aside to allow for more space, and a few tables have been set up on the altar. On the first, there is an additional copy of the rulebook, and the information cards of the victim and suspects laid out, with space for the suspects to provide their whereabouts, as well as an autopsy report. There is also a large wheeled chalkboard upon which you may write theories. On the second table is a pitcher of water and some glasses, as well as very simple sandwiches and pastries.

The door behind the altar has finally been unlocked. It's a rather plain room with an area set off by a folding screen. Inside, you will find a table on which the victim's body has been laid out. Next to the table, two black and white photographs have been hung on the screen. they are close ups of the victim's body, as it was found when the body discovery announcement chimed. A few sticks of incense burn in the corner to avoid any smells.

At 5PM, the trial will close, after which everyone is expected to have cast their votes.

It seems like most of us think Hanyuu did it. But if that's the case...what's her motive exactly?

When I first arrived here, I told Hanyuu we should deal justice onto the people who trapped us here through death. I still believe in that, but Hanyuu immediately said we shouldn't. That she didn't want there to be violence here - no blood spilled. There's no reason for her to lie, not at that time.

So I want to think about why Hanyuu killed. Normally I'd just say "cause they want out", but Hanyuu doesn't strike me as a selfish person.

The time would effect her badly.

She might feel bad about it now, I don't know.

It's possible this place can have other effects on us too.

Just saying "time affects her badly" isn't enough for me. Not when there are other immortals being suspected as well. Hanyuu doesn't strike me as a murderous type of person, and trust me I know what that type looks like.

I wouldn't be surprised if the people that made time slow also messed with her in another way.

Do you mean to say they controlled her mind? In that case, anyone could be made to kill at any time. It wouldn't make things fair.

Dragging us here isn't fair.

Yeah no shit, but if this game isn't fair then I may as well murder everyone here and they wouldn't bat an eye about it.

[personal profile] smileleftbehind 2016-02-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
But then they wouldn't be in control.

Exactly.

They make control by making the game fair to what they define to us. If it falls apart, then nothing stops us from going into a massacre.

I guess it might not be her.... She just seems very suspicious.

There are innumerable possibilities. She is old, so the girl could simply be mad.

[ but that's a non-answer, so: ]

Many of us have matters that need attending to. She may have killed to return — a plight I can sympathize with. It may also have been purely incidental. Humans are fragile, and she may have found herself in a mess that she could not untangle — a smoke and mirrors murder may have been the simplest way to solve this. In the end, does her reason convince you more or less, Buddy?

[ genuinely curious. not being condescending, for once. ]

I just want to know why. Nobody just becomes a killer out of nowhere.

[She says quietly, acting more sullen than her typical aloofness.]

It is not like we choose to kill, Buddy. Killing is as natural as any flower you could pluck, severing its tie to the earth.

[ her face is stern, but sympathetic, like a mother's. ]

You want to survive. You told me this yourself. This is the only way. We can discuss this further, later, but you will be trapped here if you do not vote tonight.

Of course I'm going to vote.

I just...I don't think I can believe it was Hanyuu.

No. Kaguya can fly and her blasts can also burn people, at least a little bit. Right now we're just judging based on circumstantial evidence.

There are times when you must compromise the truths you believe with the atrocities of nature.

Many will vote for Hanyuu, regardless of if she did or did not commit the crime. Truthfully, it does not matter to the grandmaster of this game whether the true culprit does or does not answer to their crime; in the end, someone will die, and the fault lies not entirely in the perpetrator's hands, but in the one forcing our own. You cannot stand here, navel-gazing, ruminating on the righteousness of any of us; if you truly believe in Hanyuu's innocence, channel that into uncovering the truth of this game. Into finding the true measurer of our lives.

...Fine then.

I've taken many lives and I felt all the ones I took were justified - they were all horrible, evil people. I won't kill someone unless I am certain of their guilt.

Well looking at it that way, we gotta wonder why any of the others would kill.

Though, really, it's not hard to say, "I don't want anyone to get hurt," and then turn around and hurt someone. Life is full of awful people who say one thing but do something different.

Believe me, I know that. I've been around awful people like that my whole life.

That's why Hanyuu doesn't strike me as that type of person.

I don't know, I'd still be careful. Not that I'm suspicious of anyone more than the other either way, but I've seen nicer people do more terrible things.

You can be good and still do awful things. You can even be awful and do good things.
