week 7 - trial; day 1

seven vices case 7 trial, day 1

saturday

At 9AM, every television will go off, loud enough to wake anyone sleeping. The calm, apathetic voice will advise everyone to gather in the chapel for the trial. Static will continue to blare in the head of anyone dillydallying.

Once all of the guests have gathered in the chapel, the doors will lock. Most of the pews have been moved aside to allow for more space, and a few tables have been set up on the altar. On the first, there is an additional copy of the rulebook, and the information cards of the victim and suspects laid out, with space for the suspects to provide their whereabouts, as well as an autopsy report. There is also a large wheeled chalkboard upon which you may write theories. On the second table is a pitcher of water and some glasses, as well as very simple sandwiches and pastries.

The door behind the altar has finally been unlocked. It's a rather plain room with an area set off by a folding screen. Inside, you will find a table on which the victim's body has been laid out. Next to the table, two black and white photographs have been hung on the screen. they are close ups of the victim's body, as it was found when the body discovery announcement chimed. A few sticks of incense burn in the corner to avoid any smells.

At 6PM, the trial will adjourn. Everyone will be escorted back to the hotel by Miata, after which everyone is allowed to head to either the kitchen to get dinner, or to their rooms. Attempting to wander off into the other areas of the hotel will trigger the static alarms in everyone's heads/televisions.

To make us argue about why they did it? Or because they're sick and twisted?

[ Astrid doesn't seem much less disgusted, honestly, but it's always been pretty clear her opinions on pride tend to align with Undyne's. ]

[ and then he just gestures to the suspects. ]

Who on that list seems sick and twisted to you? Is it a matter of being sick and twisted or a matter of being caught up in the moment of winning a chase?

Undyne's alibi is solid, and I didn't do this. Winning a chase is not the same thing as hunting someone down and cutting off their head. And making it spin somehow? Because that's how record players work, apparently? So it can't be a pride thing because we're all you've got.

But then I don't really know who else to consider. Only you and Undyne have the strength enough to pull off a feat like this and only Undyne has an actual weapon that can cut through a human like that. Unless there's a murder weapon somewhere around here that we haven't seen. It's either that or... or... I don't know, Sadie's secretly fucking insane or something.

I honestly don't know Sadie well enough to say one way or the other. But she's the one the coat would cover the most of, right?

Yeah, she's the shortest. It covers her whole body, nearly. If she killed them with the coat on, there's no way anything would get on her.

If you do this to brag about winning a chase, then you are sick and twisted!

But I kinda doubt Gilbert was chased all the way to the record store in the first place. Why would he run there and not towards the rooms where all the people are? Why didn't anyone hear him screaming? And how would the killer have been able to drag his headless body back without anyone noticing or without getting blood all over themselves? If they were wearing the coat, then they would have had to gone back to the pool to chain him to Alisha and then back to the clothing store and then back to the hotel again before anyone found the bodies.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

[ and all of undyne's questions are super valid to him and he doesn't have answers for all of them so he just sort of stands there and thinks about it for a moment. ]

Okay, well. The rooms are soundproof. If you're still asleep or if you're just distracted, you wouldn't hear anyone unless you're paying really close attention. I don't know why Gilbert wouldn't run upstairs but maybe he thought if he could put some distance between his killer or give them more room, he could get the advantage? He wasn't useless. I don't know how the body thing worked, I think the coat helped with that but I still... don't really know.

[ and then he's stumped again. ]

Actually, the whole chain thing in general seems overcomplicated and dumb... unless they meant to just dump Alisha in the water until Gilbert happened? Pool to lobby to record store to clothing store to... general store for the chains? Wait, that's stupid. And still really complicated! Holy shit.

Wait, there was a blood trail going to the general store?

[Now Undyne looks confused too.] I was thinking they'd decapitated Gilbert by cutting through his neck halfway and then weighing his body down with Alisha's, but...that's impossible if there's a blood trail there. Either it's from the killer holding Gilbert's head or Gilbert himself, but they must have gotten the chains after they'd already killed him.

But if that's the case, then...they probably weren't originally planning on using the chains at all. Ugh, this doesn't make any sense!!
