It seems like a lot of people are getting mementos from home, and considering Urashima's enthusiasm, Break simply assumes that "Dumpy" is a poorly named pet of Rhys's. He really isn't planning to do much more than that, but then Dumpy makes a sound.
Similarly, in an entirely normal rational manner, Break flinches sharply as soon as he hears Dumpy's horrible demonic screeching. It essentially a reflex that follows, because with a skill like daredeviling, Break somehow knows where exactly Dumpy is hovering. His cane is quickly turned in his hands, and he smacks poor Dumpy with the handle of it rather sharply. And by "sharply" I mean "you would not want this to be hitting you if you were fleshy."
