Steel, by virtue of proximity. I would not put it past a human to rig a trap and attempt to live through it themselves...I believe working to kill in the face of an adversity such as physical injury could be described as diligent, too.

...Of course, I'm sure my reasoning has flaws, but it seems the most likely to me right now.
