Yes, that's a sound theory that explains everything...except for why the killer would go through that much trouble. If they were unconscious, why not just kill them then? Unless they were hoping they'd kill one another and they could get away as the "true culprit" without having to actually kill anyone. But...even that doesn't make sense since they were torn open afterwards.
